FROM THE ARCHITECTS DRAWING

A new integrated health and social services centre in Rolleston, the Selwyn Health Hub is a significant development, designed to meet the growing population of the Selwyn District. As the area grows with purpose and consideration, architectural visions are imperative for establishing an identity that fosters a sense of belonging for local residents.

The design from IKON architects called for a distinctive aesthetic simplicity that is incredibly hard to achieve. The striking modernity needed to exhibit a gravitas, referencing the functionality of the building and its importance within the local community.

TO DESIGN REALITY

The seamless incorporation of Solaris 100 and 200 louvres into the design was achieved using the proven clasp bracket system. Frames were hinged, allowing for window cleaning and maintenance. The colour of 'matt champagne kinetic', matches perfectly with the aluminium weatherboard cladding of the building exterior. It simultaneously compliments and contrasts with the darker coloured exterior cladding elements, interspersed on either side of the 3 main sections of the building.

The end result is a work of visual subtlety which immediately becomes a landmark building. The Solaris louvres are so integrated into the overall aesthetic that their sun shading purpose for occupants is secondary to the beautification provided to the eye of a passer by. The entrancing shadows from the sculpted sections, as they reflect the champagne kinetic colour, add a glow and warmth to the building and immediately provide a connection to the exterior conditions of any given day. It delivers an impression that is compelling rather than overpowering, almost certainly memorable and most definitely praiseworthy. An exquisite design and a vision realised.
