With the three blocks creating a vertical village, all gathered around the central landscaped courtyard, Risland Albany is an apartment complex of attractive simplicity. The architect's vision used a refined palette, pairing different textures to achieve a warming contrast. Rough concrete, painted brick and grooved timber panelling, combine with a dark bronze for a contemporary feel.
Above the main entrances, custom canopies in the same dark bronze provide some protection from the elements, although their primary purpose is undoubtedly aesthetic and to provide the essential human scale to the apartment complex.
The canopies are customised from the Azimuth range and made from 4mm folded aluminium, finished in a Duratec powdercoat finish. Attachment is via support brackets to the primary structure. Any water drains to the gutter at the back of the canopy.
The canopy panels have been slightly creased, presenting a faceted, 'origami like', geometry which breaks up the vertical lines above, grounding the building so it's not overbearing for pedestrians at ground level.
Everything was manufactured off-site. Bringing the canopy construction under one roof reduced the need for layers of subcontractors and complicated project interdependencies. It's a simple and speedy approach which reduces any risk of delay and is available as an option across the Insol canopy range.
At Risland Apartments, the final canopies undoubtedly achieve the architectural intent. Importantly, it serves as an excellent study for the Insol approach to canopies and the benefits offered by it.
