FROM THE ARCHITECTS DRAWING

The design concept was remarkable for the bright use of colour to create a fun, spirited entranceway to the facility.

Beginning by replicating the diagonal lines that wrap much of the exterior, the coloured louvres grow in height until they extend from the bottom to top. When set against the backdrop of either the dark grey or light beige used elsewhere, the colours are mesmerizing by contrast. They draw your gaze to the entranceway, guiding you to the expected fun contained behind the entrance doors.

TO DESIGN REALITY

A mixture of Solaris 100 and 200 louvres were used in varying heights, with either a rear mount channel or an end spigot fix with spigots cast into the concrete. As such, the installation was straightforward and quick after accurate first-fix of brackets.

Achieving the colours wasn't so simple, as it was impossible to get a colour match with a powder coat finish. But it had to be right, so the end vision was not compromised. Those bright colours would be a natural focal point an the finish needed to be flawless and consistent to withstand the expected levels of scrutiny. A wet paint system was used to provide the desired colour range and coupled with a special pre-treatment process on the aluminium to ensure durability combine with a high quality finish.

It worked. The colours transfix your gaze, building a sense of excitement for those about to enter the building. They bring a promise of fun and good times. It's a fitting design for a building which is more than just a pool to the local community, as they continue to see their world rebuilt a decade on from the Christchurch earthquakes. Indeed, if architecture can influence your mood then this design does it. It's virtually impossible to look at the Linwood Pool without feeling an extra dose of joy and optimism. Just as the architects intended.
