FROM THE ARCHITECTS DRAWING

The signature aesthetic of Flex Fitness heavily influences the architectural intent of this Howick project. That strong brand identity, which is readily recognizable throughout their numerous gym locations and carries high levels of congruency to their digital presence, blends elements of the interior and exterior for a distinct look and feel.

To add privacy and thermal comfort for occupants, large vertical louvres extend from the roofline down, past the upper tier window, to the canopy which wraps around the exterior and leads to the main entranceway. These louvres were to be the primary means of adding distinction to the design, linking the building to the brand.

TO DESIGN REALITY

Vertical Solaris 200x50 aluminium louvres of differing lengths provide the privacy and thermal comfort desired. They have a presence that's perfectly suited to the design, being not too overpowering yet substantial enough to create character and add distinction. The louvres were fixed at 375mm centres, with brackets at the head and the aluminium canopy at the base. They're finished in a Metwood Taua powdercoat which matches the internal wooden floor finishes and reception area, providing the desired link between the interior and exterior.

The canopy consists of 54 linear metres of a 3mm aluminium single skin, which is 1000mm deep. It wraps the West, North and East elevations, leading around and up towards the main entrance. The canopy was powder coated to match the grey of the building exterior, increasing the contrast with the Metwood finish of the louvres above. Drainage slots are location on the front edge.

The finished aesthetic has the strong brand feel as demanded by the architectural intent. The Solaris louvres allow members to enjoy their workout in comfort and privacy, with the only sweat being self-inflicted rather than from solar gain. Of course, those beads of sweat will tell everyone outside what they've been doing as they exit the building. But by then, it's a well deserved sign of a session done right.
